Finding a way, finding the self
Written in English
This study first explores the ways in which nine men and women of South, Southeast and East Asian backgrounds came to be enrolled in a post-secondary physical education program, and secondly asks how these journeys influenced their sense of identity. Multiple, semi-structured, one-on-one interviews were conducted, asking about physical activity and physical education experiences, and how students came to study physical education. Most individuals negotiated with their parents in order to pursue their physical activity interests. Many participants also stated that they were one of few people of their background who showed an interest in sport. Thus, questions about identity and belonging resulted in answers ranging from feeling different and distinct, to feeling a stronger sense of ethnic identity and connection to one"s community. Moreover, some participants" comments pointed to the contested nature of "authentic" ethnic identity and how it is negotiated among members of a particular group.
